Fire Damage Repair and Restoration

How To Use A Fire Extinguisher

Most people know what to do when there is a fire in your home. Get out, get a safe distance away, and call 911. But, what happens when there is a small kitchen fire, or a small fire started by a candle right in front of you? You grab the fire extinguisher and try to put it out as fast as you can. But - do you feel confident that you'll know how to use the extinguisher when you grab it? Just remember P.A.S.S. - Pull, Aim, Squeeze, and Sweep.

  • Pull the pin at the top
  • Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire
  • Squeeze the lever slowly
  • Sweep from side to side

It's also important to make sure you have fire extinguishers stored in smart and safe places in your home and away from the reach of children. You should, at the minimum, have an extinguisher in every level of your home, but it's best to have one located in the areas that are more likely to have fires break out, such as the garage and the kitchen.

We would also suggest that you check your extinguishers every time you check your smoke detectors to ensure they are working properly. Check to see if the pressure is in the green zone, the hoses are intact, the seals are secure, and there's no outside damage like rust or dents.
